Natalie Miner and Cormac Schaefer, both seniors at Mound Westonka High School, have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships that began in 1955.
The students were notified last September that each had earned National Merit semifinalist standing, placing them in the top 5 percent of the over 1.6 million students competing for the recognition. To be considered a finalist, Miner and Schaefer had to validate their PSAT scores by taking the SAT and submitting detailed scholarship applications that included a comprehensive essay and information about their academic records, co-curricular activities, leadership abilities, honors, awards, and employment.
